Located in northwestern North Dakota it is bordered on the north by Saskatchewan, Canada, Ward and Renville counties on the east, Mountrail county on the south and Divide County on the west.

The county seat of Bowbells is located in the east-central portion of the county and has a population of approximately 498.
The distance from Bowbells to Washington DC is 1498 miles. The distance to the North Dakota state capital is 155 miles. (as the crow flies)
Bowbells is positioned 48.80 degrees north of the equator and 102.24 degrees west of the prime meridian.
